Colonial Williamsburg, a thriving 18th-century community and America's largest living history
museum. Williamsburg was the capital city of the largest and most populated of Britain's 13 colonies making it a
powerful center of politics, commerce and culture leading up to the Revolution. More than 500 original and carefully
reconstructed public buildings, private homes, taverns and shops, and 90 acres of gardens and public greens comprise the
Historic Area. Colonial Williamsburg tells the story of "Becoming Americans," how diverse peoples
evolved into a society that values liberty and equality. Colonial Williamsburg comprises 301 acres of
historic buildings, gardens and public greens where costumed interpreters ply their trades and re-enact and interpret
aspects of Colonial life. Whether visitors find themselves moved by the history, or inspired by the pure
thrill of adventure and discovery, greater Williamsburg offers diverse recreational activities sure to refresh the
spirit. (Information provided by Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance)
